Thanks Natalie - I like the applications y'all are making - very practical!

For the rest of you, Natalie and I connected through Twitter and we've swapped blogs. I enjoy hearing what practical applications people are making in marketing their business and/or changing the communication landscape through social media tools like Facebook and Twitter. Fascinating to me.

Not just small businesses, but big businesses too! I'm in the public transportation industry and we're facing major budget cuts (gee thanks governator) and so we're using social media to bring things to our customers that are free. Like transportation alerts (we're @sdmts) on detours on twitter. It's not as sophisiticated as a fancy system, but it's working. We're also using craigslist's events page and facebook's events calendar to reach our college age people. This is all in the past few months -- so I'm interested to see if its actually worked and will lift ridership for us!

This is indeed a timely post Randy. Small businesses and churches really need to assess their location and appearance. There is no excuse for not being online at this point and having a professional web site is key and less expensive than most businesses would expect.

Your point of social media is timely now as well. Not all online social media platforms are right for all organizations but experimenting with some of these is necessary. Social media takes some dedicated work to build the social communities with your customers but the cost is simply just your time. Taking time to build solid relationships will pay off with big benefits in the long term.

Great post. Couldn't agree with you more. In fact, I'd go so far as saying that "location" (like in real estate) is the single most important factor in any marketing campaign.

The truth is, you can have the most brilliant ad or marketing piece in the world, and if you're not talking to the right people, you'll get nowhere. Conversely, a ho-hum ad or campaign can perform respectably well if your audience is targeted.

Thanks for the great reminder.

Happy New Year!
Katie Langston

P.S. Funny you mention Google Alerts in your post. In fact, I found you today from Google Alerts!
